SELECTED WORKS | SPINIFEX HILL ARTISTS
Spinifex Hill Studio stands on Kariyarra Country in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The art center is home to one of the youngest Aboriginal art collectives in the north-west of Australia, the Spinifex Hill Artists. In 2008 South Hedland-based artists Irene Coffin, Max George and members of the Mothers Against Drugs group approached non-profit cultural organization FORM to request help in facilitating professional development for the town’s Aboriginal artists. Naming themselves Spinifex Hill Artists after a traditional name for Hedland, the group held their first exhibition in 2009, and over the following decade they have developed artistically and professionally. Today they number more than 40 artists, whose diverse styles and rich colour palettes reflect a range of experiences, stories and subject matter. The Spinifex Hill Studio opened in South Hedland in 2014 as the group’s permanent home.
