CHROMA | western & central desert painting
The origins of the Western Desert art movement at Papunya in 1971-72 when senior men invented an art movement, not only had a 'big bang' effect on the evolution and acceptance of modern Indigenous within the mainstream but laid the foundation for experimentation with acrylics. Pandora’s box had been opened and there was no turning back.
This exhibit celebrates the daring and visionary use of color used by many central and western desert artists. Whilst the traditional form of ocher is practiced widely in northern regions of Australia CHROMA unveils its opposite —a myriad of true desert colorists who today sit comfortably in their pursuit and exploration of color.
On view through March 30th.
